Chicken is the most consumed protein on the planet, with 50 billion chickens being raised for meat annually around the world. In order to accomplish that feat, humans have worked to squeeze every ounce of efficiency out of the modern broiler chicken. The problem that many of these methods lead to a dinner ingredient that is tasteless and troubled. It’s not good for the chickens, the farmers, or the people consuming it.

A back to the land movement
has started as an alternative to factory farmed meat that has a positive impact on the chickens, the land, and the people. Across the country and around the world, chickens are being moved out of the barns and onto fresh pasture. Chickens who live their lives moving across well managed pasture have a more diverse diet, plenty of fresh air and sunshine, and a whole lot more room to move around.

Out of this movement came the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association. APPPA is an organization built by pasture-based farmers to help other pastured poultry farmers. APPPA members cherish transparency, collaboration, and innovation in the pastured-poultry space. While the mission of each member of the organization is the same, there are as many stories to tell as there are members.

Pasture-based farmers are young and old, men and women, greenhorns and multi-generational farm families. Some come from desk jobs, and some are taking up the vocation of their parents or relatives. In order to tell theses stories, we were asked by Farm Marketing Solutions to travel to an annual APPPA conference to create a cohesive collection of portraits. These images were to tell the stories of people working the land and raising food responsibly. These portraits aimed to help the average consumer know their food by highlighting the stories of the people actually producing it. In addition to that, and the commitment of Farm Marketing Solutions, is to inspire and encourage the next generation of farmers to join the movement and help create a more resilient food system.
