TRASHION FASHION

is an effort that promotes the creative reuse of waste in our society by challenging individuals to produce wearable art with items diverted from the waste stream.

Their goal is to see a global reduction of waste through creative solutions.

Through the love of dance and fashion, their founder, Amy Merli, had the idea to bring together three fashion designers back in 2011. All creations had to be 90% consumer waste.

Some of the unique materials that were used:

parking tickets, soda cans, a trampoline, VSH tape, window screens, a show curtain, straws, dog food bags, tin cans, newspapers, magazines and plastic bags.

The Trashion Fashion community hopes to foster a generation of more conscious consumers, creators, and communities who will change the way the world sees waste. They strive to achieve this through their productions, education and community engagements.

The initial event was held in a small gallery space, which was filled to capacity with 50 guests.

The next year Trashion Fashion allowed open submissions, moved to a larger venue and entertained an audience of 250.

Today, Trashion Fashion has contributed to the creation of over 400 designs and has had dozens of productions, exhibits, workshops and community engagements throughout Connecticut; Washington, D.C.; and New York City.
